Volunteer: Feeding Friends - Helping Hospitalized Patients Eat a Hot Meal

Have a passion for helping people?  Come join Feeding Friends! At UM Rehab & Ortho, we specialize in treating people with brain or spinal cord injuries, strokes, amputations or other complex medical needs. Due to these injuries or illnesses our patients may have challenges related to seating, swallowing, coordination or other barriers to eating on their own.   For some patients, due to the challenges mentioned above, meal times may not be enjoyable.  We aim to create an environment where they can take their time, eat food when it is hot and have a pleasant meal.  Volunteers help to make this a reality by focusing on one patient, building rapport and allowing the patient the time they need to consume their meals. We need your help!  Please complete an  application to get started.

Volunteer: Family Meals

Calling all chefs and cooks!

We understand that having a loved one in the hospital can be difficult for a family. This home away from home is designed specifically for families facing short-term or extended stays while their loved one receives rehabilitative care.

Patients respond better to treatment when their loved ones are near during in the recovery process. The Hackerman-Patz House makes this possible for all families.

We'd love to give the families staying in our guest house some home cooking. Meals should be made ahead of time and dropped off at the house.  Families will be able to reheat food in our microwave or toaster oven.  We also have a crock pot in which we can keep soup or other food.

Numbers of guests vary but we typically have 10-12 family  members in house.

Please reach out to Hackerman-Patz House manager, Laurel Gaffney, to schedule a meal delivery date.  This is a great project for a youth group, date night, family or church group to do together.
