Volunteer: “Surgical Support” Volunteer Position


Baltimore Humane Society’s Spay-Neuter Center

This volunteer position is not hands-on with animals but rather vital support to the Spay-Neuter Center’s daily needs in the areas of laundry, cage-cleaning, and surgical pack preparation. We need reliable and consistent volunteers that can commit to at least one shift Monday- Friday, for the 9am-12:30 shift or for the 12:30-4pm shift.

Responsibilities include:

·        Surgical Laundry (mostly surgery drapes and towels)

·        Cleaning Cages- “spot” cleaning  throughout day and “full” cage cleaning for end of day

·        Sweeping and Mopping the floors

·        Cleaning surgical instruments and sterilizing surgical packs

·        Preparing surgical scrub bins-Chlorhexidine Scrub (pink) and Chlorhexidine Solution (blue)

·        Wrapping surgical packs to prepare them for sterilization

·        Restocking supplies as necessary (paper towels, kitty litter, litter boxes, etc)

·        Preparing testing materials and flea prevention for use in the surgery dept

The volunteers would be doing a number of these tasks each time they work a shift.  Tasks may vary with each day and tasks may vary with the time of day that the volunteer is in the Spay-Neuter Center. 

Some of the tasks require that someone be able to squat and bend but in general, they do not require any heavy lifting or wrestling with animals.  Volunteers must be able to stand for for the duration of the 3.5 hour shifts.

Hours:  Commitment: Just Fridays from 9am-12:30 or 12:30-4pm

Volunteer: AM Cleaning Help: 3 Roles

Dog Kennel Cleaners and Assistants: 

We take up to two volunteers daily to assist our kennel staff is cleaning our dog kennel. This include dishes, laundry, scrubbing, bending at the waist to make beds, and hauling a water can of water to fill water bowls.  

Wet work. I suggest rain boots or water resistant footwear with a good grip.

Intake Assistants: 

We take one volunteer daily to assist our intake staff is cleaning our intake kennel. This include dishes, laundry, scrubbing, bending at the waist to make beds, and hauling a water can of water to fill water bowls.  

Wet work. I suggest rain boots or water resistant footwear with a good grip.

Cat Cage Cleaners:

We take up to two volunteers daily to assist our staff in cleaning and feeding out cat residents.  This job has the most rules and steps of any cleaning job here.  You must be able to bend and use a stool or step ladder.

Thank you for your interest in volunteering at the Baltimore Humane Society.  The first step is to fill out a volunteer application.  Once the application is processed, you will be sent a confirmation email that has a link to a volunteer orientation slideshow.  This slideshow will share the history of BHS, teach you about some of our volunteer opportunities and show you where to go on your first visit to us. After viewing the slideshow, you will be prompted to send an email to the volunteer manager letting her know you went through the orientation.  You will then receive an email with your volunteer account (Vicnet) login information.  You will use Vicnet to pick your volunteer jobs and shifts.
