Help your neighbor get the necessary groceries they need to remain aging in place. Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland needs volunteers to help with our Grocery Assistance program in Baltimore City and Baltimore County.

Volunteers are matched to a homebound individual and work closely with their client to schedule shopping trips, prepare grocery lists, and help put the groceries away. Volunteers do not take the client to the store, but they have a Meals on Wheels credit card and the client’s shopping list to shop on their behalf.

Each shopping trip averages 1 – 3 hours. The volunteer commitment for this program is at least nine months, and a strong sense of financial responsibility is required. Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland is looking for volunteers to deliver meals to homebound individuals in their community! Delivering meals to homebound neighbors ensures that our clients can remain aging in place. We are looking for volunteers to deliver meals to the residents of Randallstown, Essex, Dundalk, Towso, Cockeysville and the surrounding neighborhoods.

Volunteers pick up meals in Baltimore County and deliver to apartment buildings and private residences in the local neighborhoods. We deliver Monday through Friday, starting at 10:30 am and routes typically take an hour and a half to complete. Volunteers can help as much as every week or volunteer as they are available as a substitute delivery driver.

Disaster Health Services Team Members are essential to the Red Cross and our ability to respond across the country to large scale disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes, and wildfires.  Events that impact entire communities.

This position requires that the volunteer hold a current, unencumbered professional license: (RN, LPN, EMT, MD, DO, PA, PN, APRN)

The purpose of the opportunity is to assist those impacted by disaster in their immediate needs regarding health care: help replace medications, medical equipment, or supplies lost to the disaster, provide education, and conduct health assessments to determine if a higher level of care is needed.

Disaster Health Services Team Members can also provide hands on care for shelter clients locally or deployed to other regions during large scale disasters. A disaster health services deployment is for 10 days. 

Time Commitment: During normal operations the time commitment is about 4 hours per month after initial training. For those who volunteer to support a large-scale disaster, the time commitment is 8-12 hours per day, multiple days (10 days if they deploy to another region).

We understand that having a loved one in the hospital can be difficult for a family. This home away from home is designed specifically for families facing short-term or extended stays while their loved one receives rehabilitative care.

Patients respond better to treatment when their loved ones are near during in the recovery process. The Hackerman-Patz House makes this possible for all families.

We'd love to give the families staying in our guest house some home cooking. Meals should be made ahead of time and dropped off at the house.  Families will be able to reheat food in our microwave or toaster oven.  We also have a crock pot in which we can keep soup or other food.

Numbers of guests vary but we typically have 10-12 family  members in house.

The Family Science Night program is part of the Maryland Science Center’s outreach programs.  Family Science Nights take place during after school time in elementary and middle schools across the state of Maryland. Volunteers of this program facilitate hands-on STEM activities for students and their family members. These 2-hour long events take place on Tuesdays, Wednesday, or Thursdays depending on the bookings received.

Inside Out Mentoring Program, Inc. is a non profit organization that provides academic tutoring and life skills coaching to middle and high school students. Our program seeks to address the achievement and opportunity gap for underserved youth and offers support to help students recover academically from the pandemic. We offer hybrid options. Students can choose to have a virtual coach or an in person coach.

We provide mentorship throughout the academic school year and provide life skills coaching to help students navigate a post pandemic world to help them become successful and independent adults. Additionally, we offer PSAT, SAT, & Life Skills Workshops (interview skills, college apps, etc.)

Work on a team to facilitate the running of The Shed, a maker space exhibit geared towards children in second grade and above. Interact with children, their families, and school groups as they learn by doing. Engage groups with fun, hands-on STEAM activities and support the daily operation of this makerspace.

Support guests as they learn through tinkering. Responsibilities include facilitating DIY activities with an emphasis on creativity and experimentation, as well as maintaining activity materials and the program space. Applicants should have basic tool skills and willingness to enthusiastically embrace a wide spectrum of making, from woodworking to papercraft to sewing. Prior experience in customer service and interaction with school-age children is highly desired.

Join us on the most exciting day of the month to help teach kids about science! Promotional days take place once a month and have additional special activities centered around a specific theme—like Bubble Days, Flight Fest, or Astro Adventure. Volunteers will work a station with an activity in 2.5 hour shifts.

Training for your assigned activity will be provided by the Marketing Assistant. You will always be trained before speaking to guests.

Promotional days take place on Saturdays or Sundays once a month, year-round. Shifts are typically available from either 11:30AM – 2PM or 2PM – 4:30PM.

Share your passion for all things astronomical by volunteering in the Crosby Ramsey Memorial Observatory, located on the rooftop of the Maryland Science Center. This position involves assisting Observatory Staff in running public programs. Volunteers will use a computer-controlled telescope to assist guests as they view the sun, moon, stars, planets and other astronomical events.

Training: Will be provided by Observatory staff. You’ll learn how to run the 1927, 8″ Alvan Clark refracting telescope, as well as other telescopes at our disposal.

Schedule: Must be able to assist at least once a month for Friday evening or Saturday afternoon public viewing (more if you can). As with anything related to observing the sky, all Observatory volunteer shifts are weather dependent.

The Maryland Science Center is proud to be the home to the St. John Properties IMAX Theater. This five-story, 38 surround-sound speaker theater plays a variety of IMAX films. Volunteers are needed to ensure guests have the best IMAX experience possible.

Lobby ambassadors provide visitors with a warm welcome and are on hand to collect ticket stubs and answer questions. This is a great role for volunteers who are at ease interacting with the public and have excellent customer service skills.

A clean, hygienic space is more important than ever to help our guests feel safe while learning.

The Marketing and Development Departments are looking for help with large group mailings. These volunteer positions are ideal for those wanting to contribute to the Maryland Science Center behind-the-scenes in a relaxed but hard-working atmosphere. Group mailing volunteers help the Maryland Science Center stay connected with its Members and Donors and, therefore, are vital to the Maryland Science Center’s continued success.

Help the thousands of school children have the best field trip ever at the Maryland Science Center! Field Trip Ambassadors board arriving buses to greet students, teachers, and chaperones. We are always looking to partner with student groups in addition to our on-going need for individual student volunteers. 

Student Volunteers serve as "Special Friends" for the people we support.  Students will be matched with an individual with whom they can visit and engage in recreational activities.  

Students may volunteer at 2520 Pot Spring Rd in Timonium or at one of our 46 group homes in the Baltimore metro area.  Students will be assigned on an individual basis.

Gallagher Services provides scholarships annually to up to two outstanding volunteers who are high school seniors.

Visit with the people we serve in one of the 46 group homes in the Baltimore Metro area.  These visits can be social one on one visits or volunteers can choose to assist with activities involving all the residents of the household.

NAMI Sharing Hope Facilitator

Role Description: NAMI Sharing Hope is a free safe space for people of Black/African Ancestry to have conversations about mental health and wellness. It was created by Black and Brown communities to give other Black and Brown communities a supportive and healing space in which they can be open about their struggles. NAMI Sharing Hope helps introduce these conversations through a three-part community conversation series grounded in the sharing of sacred stories and guided dialogue on mental wellness and support. We provide high-quality videos, facilitator guides, and other resources that you can use to organize community conversations rooted in sacred storytelling and ancestral wisdom. Facilitators will help prompt discussions about community needs and mental health challenges, as well as wellness and coping strategies. Separate segments are available for Families, Young People, and Community Leaders, and material can be adapted to diverse settings from churches to cafeterias to large celebrations, family gatherings, and more.

Location: Presentations are held throughout Baltimore City and Baltimore County.

Role Description: In Our Own Voice (IOOV) was created to involve individuals living with mental illness in NAMI’s national effort to educate the general public about mental illness. The goal is to change attitudes, preconceived notions and stereotypes about what individuals living with mental illness look and act like. Presentations are given to peers, health care providers, law enforcement officials, faith communities, students, and any other community organization that is interested in learning more about mental illness and recovery. The presentation format includes viewing a NAMI video about mental illness, personal testimony from 2 IOOV volunteers, and time for questions from the audience. In fiscal year 2018, NAMI Metro Baltimore volunteers provided over 170 presentations that reached more than 2,300 audience members! As a bonus, all In Our Own Voice presenters will receive a $30 stipend!

Location: Presentations are held both virtually and throughout Baltimore City and Baltimore County.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is the nation's largest grassroots organization dedicated to improving the lives of people living with serious mental illness and their families.

Volunteers help to serve as teachers for NAMI's Family-To-Family education course. This is a free, 8-week class for families and friends of adults with mental illness. The course is taught by two volunteer teachers who provide information about mental illness, as well as communication, problem solving skills, and strategies to support a loved one with a mental illness.

Role Requirements:
▪ Personal experience having an adult family member with a mental illness
▪ Complete a 2-day training program provided by NAMI after completing the Family-to-Family course as a participant 
▪ Current member of NAMI, or willingness to join
▪ Volunteers are encouraged to teach the course at least twice in the 2 years following completion of training. The course meets for 2 hours for eight consecutive weeks.

Volunteer Responsibilities:
▪ Maintain confidentiality of course participants
▪ Work cooperatively with a co-teacher to conduct the courses
▪ Coordinate classes with the Director of Signature Programs, including completion of all required paperwork
▪ Complete online refresher course every 2 years
▪ Assist with planning and outreach for the course

Volunteer Mentors receive a $250 stipend for their service.

▪ Participated in a Peer-to-Peer course ▪ Complete an 8-hour online training and a 2 day Zoom training provided by NAMI
▪ Current member of NAMI, or willingness to join

NAMI Connection Peer Support Group Facilitator

Role Description: NAMI Connection Peer Support Groups follow a peer-based, mutual support group model that provides an opportunity for individuals living with mental illness to share and learn from their common experience. Groups are a safe space to confront the challenges that all people with mental illness face, regardless of diagnosis. Facilitators offer support, information, and practical knowledge to people living with mental illness. Facilitators are not counselors or teachers; rather, they are present primarily to give the group structure by opening and closing each support group session, guiding discussion, and shifting discussion when necessary. Groups meet weekly under the guidance of 2 volunteer facilitators.

Location: Support Groups are held both virtually and throughout Baltimore City and Baltimore County.

Reports to: Director of Signature Programs or Outreach Coordinators

Working with Families in Crisis Presenter

Role Description: Working with Families in Crisis is a workshop that helps law enforcement, first responders, crisis workers, and mental health professionals work more effectively with family members dealing with the trauma of mental illness.

Location: Presentations are held throughout Baltimore City and Baltimore County.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is the nation's largest grassroots organization dedicated to improving the lives of people living with serious mental illness and their families. Virtual Voices (VV) is an experiential workshop unique to NAMI Metropolitan Baltimore, and is one of the most popular outreach education programs offered.

Patricia E. Deegan, PhD, a well-known disability-rights advocate, psychologist and researcher, developed the groundbreaking simulation. Workshop participants experience simulated auditory hallucinations via headphones while being assigned simple tasks.

The goal of this workshop is for participants to challenge their perceptions, begin to understand the day-to-day challenges that people with mental illness face, and promote empathy in their interactions with individuals with mental illness. VV presentations are given to varied audiences including police, hospital staff, students, and mental health workers.

Role Requirements:
▪ Attend a Virtual Voices session as an observer, as well as a 2-hour training
▪ Experience in teaching or public speaking is helpful for Lead Facilitators but not required; however, volunteers must be comfortable speaking in front of groups.
▪ Volunteer Commitment: Volunteers are encouraged to assist with VV workshops at least twice in the year following completion of training. Workshops are typically 2.5 hours and held on weekdays during business hours.
▪ Minimum Age: 18 years old.

Volunteer Responsibilities:
▪ The Lead Facilitator is a volunteer who conducts the workshop with support from 3-4 assistant volunteers.
▪ Work cooperatively with a small group of volunteers under the direction of the Lead Facilitator to set up and facilitate the workshop.
▪ The Lead Facilitator is responsible for overseeing the workshop from beginning to end which includes assigning volunteer roles at sessions, leading the sequence of course components, and moderating discussion.
▪ The assistant volunteers are assigned tasks for role-playing such as Psychiatrist, Test Administrator, and Day Program Staff.
