Volunteer: Financial Wellness Counselor

Baltimore County Department of Corrections (BCDC) is seeking a Volunteer Financial Wellness Counselor. This individual is a professional who provides financial education programs and resources that are evidence-based to support Incarcerated Individuals (I/I’s). This will aid I/I’s to create personalized plans for budgeting, debt management, and savings. The role focuses on helping Incarcerated Individuals (I/I’s) by providing guidance to educate and teach financial health.

This role requires willingness to coordinate with the Facility Volunteer Coordinator, and Shift, as needed. All potential volunteers will be subject to a background screening, security screening, facility orientation, and PREA training.

The responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

·         Producing/supplying educational materials/curriculum to I/I’s.

·         Offer sessions to I/I’s experiencing financial challenges, tailoring support to their unique needs.

·         Lead educational sessions on Financial Wellness that teach I/I’s tools and resources.

·         Lead research-based financial education sessions, covering budgeting, credit, debt management, and financial app use.

·        Support in developing healthy strategies to move toward financial health for daily life and community reintegration, as well as long-term financial stability in areas of understanding credit and retirement planning.

·        Work with BCDC Staff, peers, and other professionals to ensure comprehensive care for I/I’s being served.

·        Displaying a heightened level/skill of empathy, active listening, cultural sensitivity, and strong communication skills.

Qualifications, Skills, & Education: The following are recommended but may not be required.  Experienced professional with at least 5 + years in Industry/Field and/or Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or a related field, to substitute for years. Certification/advanced training in Financial Education is a plus. Work experience in the industry/field of Financial Services, Financial Planning, and/or Banking.

Volunteer: Grief Support Counselor Volunteer

This individual is a professional who provides compassionate, evidence-based support to Incarcerated Individuals (I/I’s) coping with loss, whether it’s the death of a loved one, a significant life change, or other forms of personal grief. The role focuses on helping Incarcerated Individuals (I/I’s) process emotions and reduce emotional distress, understand the grieving process, and develop healthy coping strategies to move toward healing and resilience, for daily life and community reintegration.

This role requires willingness to coordinate with the Facility Chaplain, Volunteer, and Shift, as needed. All potential volunteers will be subject to a background screening, security screening, facility orientation, and PREA training.

The responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

·         Offer individual sessions to I/I’s experiencing grief, tailoring support to their unique needs.

·         Facilitate support groups for I/I’s dealing with similar losses and shared coping.

·         Lead educational sessions on grief and loss that teach I/I’s about normal grief reactions and healthy coping mechanisms.

·         Work with BCDC Staff, peers, and other professionals to ensure comprehensive care for I/I’s being served.

·         Displaying a heightened level/skill of empathy, active listening, cultural sensitivity, and strong communication skills.

Qualifications, Skills, & Education: The following are recommended but may not be required.  Master’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field. Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) or equivalent certification. Certification/advanced training in grief counseling.  Work experience in bereavement, grief support, and/or mental health settings.

The Chaplain administers, supervises, and facilitates programs that promote the spiritual welfare and religious guidance of inmates at the Baltimore County Department of Corrections. All operations are conducted in accordance with the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act of 2000 (RLUIPA), which ensures every incarcerated individual’s right to practice their faith.

Ordination or membership in an ecclesiastically recognized religious institute or community. Current ecclesiastical endorsement by a recognized body within the candidate’s faith tradition. Willingness to serve and coordinate programs for inmates of all faiths. Ability to provide proof of religious credentials and oversee the delivery of religious services.

Individual should be a lay or ordained minister with solid computer skills and flexibility in scheduling.
