Deaf Shalom Zone, Inc

Who We Are

Mission: Deaf Shalom Zone seeks to empower Deaf and DeafBlind individuals toward greater Access, Equity, Independence, Opportunity and Unity through our C.A.R.E. model of Case Management, Advocacy, Referral, and Education.

We are not a provider of direct service, but we know who is. We help Deaf and DeafBlind individuals connect with government agencies, charitable organizations, and service providers of all types and with students and other volunteers. We also educate the Deaf community, offering topics of general interest through student interpreters with their mentors, or Deaf presenters.  We invite the hearing community to come and experience authentic communicate with the deaf/blind community through volunteer, social, and educational activities.

What We Do

Case Management:

  • Assist Deaf and DeafBlind individuals in understanding their mail and personal transactions, evaluating their health and safety needs and accessing supports, acquiring and utilizing assistive technology, connecting with social and economic opportunities, and more.

Advocacy:

  • Offer support and information as Deaf and DeafBlind individuals learn to self- advocate with employers and service providers about the legal obligation to provide equal access and assist them in requesting accommodations.
  • Partner with other groups and organizations to bring attention to issues that have an impact on Deaf and DeafBlind community.
  • Encourage and support Deaf and DeafBlind individuals to be responsible consumers of interpreting services, regardless of who is paying, and to provide feedback to interpreters and their agencies, positive or negative.

In addition to case management and advocacy services, Deaf Shalom Zone offers a food pantry, community meal, workshops and classes, as well as social events and activities.
