Description

When families in our community face unexpected emergencies, most often home fires, our Disaster Action Team (DAT) volunteers are the compassionate first presence they meet. DAT volunteers provide comfort, guidance, and reassurance during someone's most difficult moments.

If you're someone who enjoys helping others, working as part of a supportive team, and bringing calm to stressful situations, this role may be a wonderful fit.

What You'll Do as a DAT Responder:

  • Be part of a caring team that responds to local emergencies.
  • Serve in rotating & on-call shifts (about 24 hours/month, broken into 6-hour blocks).
  • Respond to local incidents—such as home fires—during your on-call time.
  • Meet with impacted families in person and help them access immediate necessities and Red Cross support.
  • Work alongside your team to determine what additional help may be needed.

What Makes Someone a Great Fit:

  • A calm, respectful, and compassionate presence with people from all walks of life.
  • Comfortable using a computer for simple tasks like email, online training, and video calls.
  • Able to adapt to changing situations while staying focused on helping others.
  • Has reliable transportation.
  • Must be 18 or older.

How to Get Started:

  1. Create a Red Cross volunteer account
  2. Complete the volunteer application, including the background check authorization.
  3. After you've submitted your application, contact nicole.vega2@redcross.org so we can guide you through the next steps.
