Baltimore County Department of Corrections (BCDC) is seeking a Volunteer Financial Wellness Counselor. This individual is a professional who provides financial education programs and resources that are evidence-based to support Incarcerated Individuals (I/I’s). This will aid I/I’s to create personalized plans for budgeting, debt management, and savings. The role focuses on helping Incarcerated Individuals (I/I’s) by providing guidance to educate and teach financial health.
This role requires willingness to coordinate with the Facility Volunteer Coordinator, and Shift, as needed. All potential volunteers will be subject to a background screening, security screening, facility orientation, and PREA training.
The responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
· Producing/supplying educational materials/curriculum to I/I’s.
· Offer sessions to I/I’s experiencing financial challenges, tailoring support to their unique needs.
· Lead educational sessions on Financial Wellness that teach I/I’s tools and resources.
· Lead research-based financial education sessions, covering budgeting, credit, debt management, and financial app use.
· Support in developing healthy strategies to move toward financial health for daily life and community reintegration, as well as long-term financial stability in areas of understanding credit and retirement planning.
· Work with BCDC Staff, peers, and other professionals to ensure comprehensive care for I/I’s being served.
· Displaying a heightened level/skill of empathy, active listening, cultural sensitivity, and strong communication skills.
Qualifications, Skills, & Education: The following are recommended but may not be required. Experienced professional with at least 5 + years in Industry/Field and/or Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or a related field, to substitute for years. Certification/advanced training in Financial Education is a plus. Work experience in the industry/field of Financial Services, Financial Planning, and/or Banking.
