The BHS Spay-Neuter Center is looking for volunteers to assist with patient monitoring* during and after spay-neuter surgical procedures of dogs, cats, rabbits, and guinea pigs. We need reliable and consistent volunteers that can commit to at least one shift Monday- Friday from 9:30am-2:00pm.
Responsibilities include:
· Assisting with patient preparation for surgery- correct placement of all respiratory, cardiovascular and temperature monitoring devices
· Observing surgery and being available for the surgeon if they need anything during the surgical procedure.
· Monitoring the respiratory rate, heart rate, temperature, and depth of anesthesia of animal patients while undergoing spay-neuter surgery
· Monitoring these same patients as they recovery from anesthesia and surgery
NOTE- The volunteer will not be permitted to perform any part of the actual surgical procedure
NOTE- A Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) and/or a Licensed Veterinarian (DVM or VMD) will be present to supervise all responsibilities performed
Position requires…
§ Ability to stand for up to 6 hours
§ Ability to bend, squat, and kneel comfortably
§ Good hearing and vision
§ Ability to lift up to 40 lbs
§ Comfortable working with dogs and cats
§ Ability to tolerate the sight of blood and internal organs during the surgical procedures
§ Ability to tolerate dealing with animal vomit, urine, and feces if necessary
§ Ability to remain calm during surgical procedures that could involve rare, stressful emergency situations
*Training will be provided
VERY IMPORTANT- This volunteer must be capable and committed to learning new things, showing up to their shift on time, and having an excellent attendance record.
Hours: Commitment: Just Thursdays and Fridays from 9:30am-2:00pm
